TimeWorks Helps Make Special Olympics Fun Day a Success

NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Dozens of very special athletes enjoyed a day of healthy competition and fellowship recently when Special Olympics (SO) Bahamas held its annual Bocce Family Fun Day on the Eastern Parade.

SO was joined by TimeWorks, the volunteer arm of the Lyford Cay Foundation, which helped serve lunch and drinks as well as taking part in the camaraderie and games.

The Fun Day is always an exciting occasion for the SO athletes, who thrive on showing off their talents at bocce, a competitive game of skill similar to boules.

Basil Christie, Chairman of SO Bahamas, declared the event a rousing success.

“We had more athletes than ever come out, and all of us had a really good time,” he said. “I was especially happy to spend time coaching some of our younger athletes, who show great promise.”

“The athletes’ excitement was contagious, and all of us were so impressed with their focus and dedication,” said Suzy Robinson, Chairperson of the Lyford Cay Foundation’s Gifts and Grants Committee, which oversees TimeWorks.

Established in 2004 on the principle that the time and skills of people can be as valuable as their money, TimeWorks serves the Bahamian community by mobilizing a diverse group of individuals in volunteerism and civic engagement. To date, it has provided more than 3,000 ‘man’ hours to 14 local non-profit organisations.

TimeWorks’ sponsors include Pictet Bank & Trust, RBC Royal Bank of Canada and Templeton Global Advisors.
