TimeWorks Assists with Hands For Hunger Holiday Food Drive
Hands For Hunger has initiated several food donation activities throughout New Providence, and in December TimeWorks kicked off the holiday season by assisting the group with a special food drive.
Using their own vehicles, TimeWorks helpers joined other volunteers and picked up food donations from 13 branches of FirstCaribbean International Bank in Nassau and delivered them to Hands For Hunger at the New Providence Community Centre. The food had been generously donated by employees of the bank. Over the next few days, we helped sort the items into nutritious packages and delivered them to 10 non-profit agencies around New Providence. A total of 3,300 lbs. of food was collected and distributed.
Hands For Hunger was co-founded in 2008 by Alanna Rodgers, a former participant in the Lyford Cay Foundations' SEARCH programme, which assists outstanding Bahamian students in the college application process and matches them with top schools abroad, and the President's Scholars Programme at The College of The Bahamas, to secure funding for their studies.
Each day, Hands For Hunger volunteers pick up fresh, high quality food that would otherwise go to waste — from grocery stores, food distributors, restaurants and hotels — and within hours transports it in refrigerated trucks to those who need it most: community centres, shelters, churches and soup kitchens.
In 2008, the Lyford Cay Foundations were thrilled to be able to donate $10,000 to Hands For Hunger to help the group pay for diesel fuel and electricity for their trucks.
